Re-Tweeting On Twitter

February 10th, 2009

I’ve been asked about re-tweeting twitter messages. What it is and how to do it. Read on to find out more about the power of re-tweeting:

When you see something useful on twitter, maybe a useful resource or an interesting blog post for example, you may want to share this with your followers. You do this by re-tweeting.

Re-tweeting can be done manually or some twitter clients (twhirl is one) have a re-tweet facility.

Re-tweeting is simply posting a tweet with either a copy of the original message or your own comment about it.

It’s best to include the @screen-name of the originator with your description or comment along with the original link or links.

(UPDATE: I neglected to mention and to include RT  for Re-Tweet in front of the @screen-name)

Here’s an example of a tweet by Gary Parkes that I re-tweeted:

————————————————————————–

Latest: @GarryParkes Interesting topic Gary, outsourcing, I’ll give this some consideration http://tinyurl.com/baj8nd

————————————————————————–

When you hit update your tweet will be broadcast and all of your followers will get to see your re-tweeted message. This gains wider exposure for the originators link and hopefully adds value for your followers.

This can also be a good way to build relationships with people. Wouldn’t you appreciate having someone re-tweet your messages and links? It’s also likely that when you have something that you would like to have re-tweeted that they will return the compliment.

But think about this for a minute. If you have something that has value that becomes very popular it could be re-tweeted multiple times. This is how tweets can become viral. Can you see the potential power in this?

Be selective about what you re-tweet. Used correctly, re-tweeting can add value for your followers, give you more exposure, and help to build your branding.

Happy twittering!

New twhirl twitter client

January 24th, 2009

FirefoxScreenSnapz054.jpg

Have you heard the news about the Twitter client Twhirl?  The looks and sounds fantastic.

There are a host of new features with many more planned. For example:

  • Record video and reply to your friends from Twhirl.
  • Active conversations and user search on Seesmic are supported.
  • You can automatically post your messages from Twhirl to Facebook, MySpace, LinkedIn, Wordpress and a host of other services with the integrated ping.fm.
  • You can see when other people are talking about you.
  • Pick any topic in near real-time, set up a tabbed search so that you can get on with something else and return later to get the latest updates on subjects that interests you.
  • Set optional notifications to get alerts while you are busy working.
  • Twhirl allows you to shorten your URL’s and now you can track who clicks on them and see where they come from.

This is your opportunity to get the new features in advance. The new Twhirl has just been released in preview.

They are looking for people to review the new client now and asking for feedback. So you can make your comments and requests for new features known.

Check out the blog post by Loic Le Meur  to find out how you can get it.

Squidoo Stirs Up A Storm At Twitter!

January 20th, 2009

Have you heard the news? There’s a storm brewing between Twitter and Squidoo!

It’s a viral storm that you should know about.

Imagine how useful it would be if you could ask your Twitter followers questions and get responses delivered to a page you set up.

Well now you can combine the power of Squidoo and Twitter and get those answers.

Squidoo has launched TWTTRSTRM an application that allows you to get feedback from your twitter followers and organise their responses in an archive page on Squidoo.

With one click your followers can respond and tweet their answers to your question.

But even better, this can also be seen and used by the followers of your followers. This can turn into a viral storm as their followers can also see it in turn. That’s why they named it to represent TWITTER STORM.

When the storm subsides and the dust has settled, the results remain on record for posterity (or at least as long as you keep the page).

The TWTTRSTRM response page on Squidoo also supports the normal additional content such as Video, Photographs, RSS feeds, Links etc. And being Squidoo, every page is capable of generating revenue ether for charity or for the page creator, if that option is selected.

So, how could you use TWTTRSTRM ? What are the burning questions that you would like instant answers to?

Check it out: TWTTRSTRM

Attention All Twitter Users

January 6th, 2009

A word of WARNING to all Twitter users:

Just a heads up warning about phishing scams on twitter.

I’m talking from experience here as I, along with a lot of others, got caught out by this yesterday January 5th 2009.

I clicked an email link in a direct message appearing to be from Twitter and logged in. That gave away my password and I could not log into my Twitter account. I eventually managed to submit a change password request to Twitter and once I changed my password I was able to log back in.

Later in the day I discovered that a number of messages had been distributed in my name. I hastily sent an update appologising to my followers if they were caused any problem by this.

The moral of the story here is to be very cautious about the links that you click! Especially those that require you to log in.

In the future I will only view messages that interest me after I have logged in and I will not respond direct to email messages.

The Twitter blog has a post about it here

Check out the link for basic tips on how to avoid phishing scams.

Stay Safe!
